Setting aside the West Bengal government’s decision to deny permission for BJP’s rath yatra in West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday said that the rath yatra can take place under certain conditions.

The single bench of the High Court also pointed out that it was the state government’s responsibility to maintain law and order during the rath yatra. As for the BJP, the High Court made it clear that in case any law and order issues take place during the yatra, then the BJP will also be held accountable for it.

The court also said that when the yatra is about to enter one district from another then the related district administration has to be informed well in advance.

“We were always ready to abide by conditions to hold the yatra peacefully. We welcome the High Court’s verdict,” state BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.

He also said that BJP president Amit Shah will attend the yatra. However, the date of party president’s arrival is yet to be decided.

Earlier, the state government denied permission for BJP’s rath yatra on the ground that it may disrupt communal harmony in Bengal.
