Clashes in Kerala; Cong worker killed

The run-up to the May 16 Assembly election, in Kerala had another round of political violence as clashes broke out between CPM and BJP activists near Thiruvananthapuram city late on Monday night.

Late on Monday, Kattayikonam in Thiruvananthapuram district witnessed clashes between CPM and BJP workers in connection with protests against the Congress-led government’s plans to revive a pending master plan for Thiruvananthapuram.

The BJP organised a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the district on Tuesday, while the CPM also organised a hartal in the Kazhakuttam-Kattayikonam regions of the district, both claiming that the attacks on their activists came without provocation.

About 30 activists, from both groups, including senior BJP leader and the partys former state president V Muraleedharan were injured in the clashes. Policemen were also injured and some vehicles attacked during the clashes.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the late night attack. Reports said Sunilkumar was an activist of the CPM-affiliated Democratic Youth Federation of India before he moved to the Congress.
