Seeking to regain its foothold among Dalits, the Congress is making concerted efforts in 130 Lok Sabha seats, including the 84 reserved for SCs, as it aims to unseat Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the general elections next year.

Buoyed by the successful launch of its 'Save the Constitution' campaign earlier this week, the Congress now plans to organise similar events to tap in the anger of the Dalit community against the Modi government that found expression in the protests on April 2.

The protests called by 30 Dalit rights organisations against the dilution of the atrocities act by the Supreme Court had taken a violent turn prompting the government to sit up and take notice the anger among Dalits and tribals.

First on the Congress radar are the election-bound states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and Rajasthan — states which also have a sizeable population of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

"Besides the 84 seats reserved for the SCs, we have identified about 40-45 seats where the SCs form 20% of the population," Nitin Raut, chairman of the SC Department of the AICC told DH here.

Raut said the SC Department was also mobilising its cadre from states such as Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for campaigning in the Karnataka Assembly elections.

He said the Congress will chalk out special programmes to reach out to the Dalit community in these constituencies as part of the year-long 'Save the Constitution' campaign launched by Congress president Rahul Gandhi last Monday.

Rahul had announced at the rally to launch the campaign that he would be participating in the initiative as and when possible.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had bagged nearly half of the 84 seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes, while the Congress had managed to win three or four such seats.
