Last Updated 06 February 2019, 03:25 IST

The Congress is back to the drawing board over its plans for Uttar Pradesh after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was made the AICC general secretary in-charge of the eastern region of the state.

Since her return from the US on Monday evening, Priyanka held a series of meetings with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and top party leaders to give final touches to the plans for Uttar Pradesh, where it has decided to go solo after being left out of the SP-BSP-RLD alliance.

Earlier, Rahul was scheduled to address 13 rallies across the state in February.

On Monday evening, Rahul met Priyanka, AICC general secretary in-charge of western Uttar Pradesh Jyotiraditya Scindia, UP Congress chief Raj Babbar and AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal to discuss the party's strategy. The meeting continued on Tuesday evening.

Before taking charge on Sunday, Priyanka is expected to take part in the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj along with Rahul.

On Tuesday, Priyanka was allocated a room at the AICC Headquarters next to Congress president Rahul Gandhi's office. It was the same room that Rahul had occupied as vice president of the Congress when his mother Sonia was heading the party.

Rahul has already indicated that as AICC general secretary, Priyanka would have a national role and will not be limited to eastern UP.

Already, Congress units in Karnataka and Maharashtra have asked the party managers to schedule rallies for Priyanka in the respective states.

Priyanka is scheduled to attend the meeting of AICC general secretaries and in-charges of states convened by Rahul on Thursday evening at AICC headquarters to discuss the strategy for the Lok Sabha elections.

On Saturday, Rahul is meeting presidents of the party's state units and leaders of the Congress Legislature Parties from across the country.
