Congress defends Haryana government on spurt in rape cases

 The Congress Wednesday defended the Haryana government over the spurt in rape cases in the state, saying that steps were being taken to nail the guilty and provide relief to victims.

Refuting allegations that the Congress-ruled state was not doing enough, party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury said, "It (Haryana government) is seized of the matter...It is not sitting with hand ties."

Chowdhury added that police were also working discreetly due to social reasons.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday met the family of a Dalit gang-rape victim near Haryana's Narwana town in Jind district after the teenaged girl committed suicide.

The party president called for severest punishment to the perpetrators and assured justice to the victim's family.

Fifteen cases of rapes have been reported in Haryana in just a month.Girls from the Dalit community have been raped in Hisar, Sonipat and Rohtak districts.

Districts in Haryana where gang-rape and rape cases were reported are: Rohtak, Hisar, Jind, Bhiwani, Yamunanagar, Panipat, Sonipat, Ambala, Karnal, Faridabad and Kaithal.
