Congress names poll panel for Gujarat

Last Updated 24 August 2017, 19:49 IST

Gearing up for the Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress on Thursday named former state unit chief Siddharth Patel the chairman of the campaign committee and accommodated at least 100 leaders in party posts.

Former AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry was named the chairman of the election manifesto committee. He will be assisted by AICC Secretary Deepak Babria and Gaurav Pandhya.

Siddarth is the son of former chief minister Chimanbhai Patel.

The appointments were cleared by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who is scheduled to launch the party campaign in Gujarat next month by addressing a workers’ meeting and felicitating the legislators who stood by the party in the keenly contested Rajya Sabha elections earlier this month.

AICC spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil has been made chairman of the election media committee, while Arjun Modhwadia will helm the poll publicity and material panel.

Nareshbhai Raval, a former minister of state in the last Congress government in 1994, has been made chairman of the election co-ordination committee for urban areas.

Rahul informed that 10 vice presidents, 14 general secretaries, seven spokespersons and 63 secretaries were appointed.

The Congress is sensing a comeback in the state where it was last in power in 1995. It believes that the recent Patidar agitation and the incidents of violence against Dalits could dent the BJP support base.
