Congress wants Vaghela as Gujarat CM face

Last Updated 18 April 2017, 20:34 IST
The Congress, hopeful of making it to power in Gujarat after a gap of more than two-and-a-half decades, seems to be fighting on multiple fronts. Not just with the ruling BJP that has been in power for over two decades, but even within.

The day Prime Minister Narendra Modi was moving around the state steam-rolling his opponents with a multifaceted attack by holding public rallies from Surat in South Gujarat to Botad in Saurashtra, 36 of 57 Congress legislators in Gujarat Assembly were believed to be petitioning the case of their leader Shankarsinh Vaghela with AICC observer for Gujarat, Gurudas Kamat.

They had gathered at the residence of Vaghela outside Gandhinagar and wanted the 77-year-old leader to be named the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the Assembly polls slated for end of this year.

“Looking at his age, this could be a do or die political battle for Vaghela and he will be at his aggressive best,” a person close to Vaghela said.
