In the four-cornered contest for the LS seat, Ruala defeated his nearest rival H Lallungmuana, an independent candidate sponsored by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) combine, by a record margin of 1,05,148 votes.
Ruala, who had lost the Parliamentary polls in 1977 to R  Rothuama of the People’s Conference (PC) by a margin of 16,008 votes, this time secured 2,09,055 votes while former MP Lallungmuana managed only 1,03,907 votes.
Compared to the last Parliamentary polls held in 2004 where Vanlalzawma of the then ruling MNF nominee defeated Dr Laltluangliana Khiangte, an independent candidate sponsored by the opposition Congress, by a margin of 23,694 votes in a triangular contest, the winning margin this time is huge and political analysts here said that this was the highest ever winning margin in Mizoram’s political history.
