The body of the 52-year-old Mahanarayan Tiwari, who worked with the District Crime Record Bureau in Mirzapur, was recovered late Thursday evening from the railway tracks in Devapura Pachwal village.

"Prima-facie, it appears the policeman was killed and later his body was thrown before a running train to give the murder an accident angle," police inspector Ramesh Chaubey Friday told reporters in Mirzapur, some 250 km from Lucknow.

"Blood stains found in the area indicate that the constable's body was dragged for a distance before being brought near the rail tracks," added Chaubey, who declined to comment further.

According to sources, around Rs.2,000 cash and a mobile phone were found in the constable's pockets, which suggests that the crime was not committed with an intention of loot.

Tiwari lived in Allahabad with his family. He used to travel daily for duty at the District Crime Record Bureau in Mirzapur.
