JOIN USMamata Banerjee's TMC faced a massive headwind in the key battleground state of West Bengal where it is locked in a neck-to-neck fight with the BJP, with the state's ruling party leading in 22 Lok Sabha seats and the challenger saffron outfit in 19.
According to latest Election Commission figures, the BJP was also the main contender in 21 of the 22 seats where the Trinamool Congress was leading.
The saffron party was giving the TMC a run for its money even in terms of vote share having polled 39.81 per cent of votes counted so far. The TMC has clinched 43.8 per cent.
The four-party Left Front, once a formidable force in the state, has garnered a measly 7.8 per cent of votes so far, and its candidates are leading in none of the state's 42 Lok Sabha seats.
According to latest Election Commission figures, the BJP was also the main contender in 21 of the 22 seats where the Trinamool Congress was leading. India Trinamool Congress (AITC) ahead in 22 out of 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
The Congress was leading in one Lok Sabha seat, while the Left is yet to take a lead in any of the constituencies.
In the outgoing 16th Lok Sabha, the TMC has 34 seats in West Bengal, whereas the BJP has only two.
The Congress and the CPI(M)-led Left Front have four and two seats respectively. Congratulating the winners, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee called for a complete review of the results.
"Congratulations to the winners. But all losers are not losers. We have to do a complete review and then we will share our views with you all. Let the counting process be completed fully and the VVPATs match," she tweeted.
BJP's national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said the trends show that the days of "TMC's misrule is numbered in Bengal".
"The initial trends reflect the anti-TMC mood. Despite so much terror in Bengal, the people have reposed faith in BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. The days of TMC's misrule are numbered in Bengal," Vijayvargia said.
As per the current EC trends, the TMC has so far secured 44.61 per cent votes, closely followed by the BJP, which has bagged 39.03 per cent votes. The CPI(M) and the Congress have garnered a meager 6.66 per cent and 5.44 per cent share of the pie respectively.
In Asansol, Union minister Babul Supriyo is leading by 75971 votes against Moon Moon Sen of the TMC. S S Ahluwalia, another Union minister and BJP candidate from Burdwan-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat, is leading by 23444 votes against Mamtaz Sanghamita of the TMC.
Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, is leading by 148834 votes in Diamond Harbour constituency. He is the sitting MP from the seat. In Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, BJP candidate Raju Bista is leading by 175535 votes against Amar Singh Rai of the TMC.
BJP state president Dilip Ghosh is leading by 5051 votes against Manas Ranjan Bhunia of the TMC in Medinipur. In Barrackpore seat, TMC candidate Dinesh Trivedi is trailing by 5221 votes against BJP's Arjun Singh. In Malda North seat, BJP's Khagen Murmu is leading by 1789 votes against Mausam Noor of the AITC.
In Kolkata North constituency, two-time TMC MP from the seat, Sudip Bandopadhyay, is leading by 22034 votes against Rahul Sinha of the BJP. In Jangipur Lok Sabha seat, Khalilur Rahman of the TMC is leading by 113845 votes against BJP's Mafuja Khatun.
Former president Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit, who had won the seat by a narrow margin of 8,161 votes in the 2014 general elections, is now trailing the third position. In Ghatal Lok Sabha seat, TMC candidate and popular actor Dipak Adhikari (Dev) is leading by 36003 votes against former IPS officer and BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh.
In the prestigious Kolkata South seat, TMC's Mala Roy is leading by a margin of over four lakh votes against BJP's Chandra Kumar Bose, grandnephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. In Hooghly Lok Sabha seat, BJP's Locket Chatterjee is leading by 65,727 votes against Ratna De Nag of the AITC.
In Purulia, Jyotirmay Singh Mahato of the BJP is leading by 62719 votes against Mriganka Mahato of the TMC. In Raiganj, BJP's Debasree Chaudhuri is leading by 4699 votes against AITC's Kanialal Agarwal.
Sougata Roy of the TMC is leading by 27311 votes against Samik Bhattacharya of BJP in Dum Dum Lok Sabha seat. Nishith Pramanik of the BJP is trailing behind TMC's Paresh Chandra Adhikary by 31478 votes in Coochbehar.
In Basirhat, TMC candidate and actor Nusrat Jahan Ruhi is leading by 141096 votes against BJP's Sayantan Basu. Mahua Moitra of the AITC is leading by 72452 votes against Kalyan Chaubey of the BJP in Krishnagar, while West Bengal Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee is trailing behind Subhas Sarkar of the BJP by 24561 votes in Bankura. In Baharampur, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress is leading by 34415 votes against Apurba Sarkar of the TMC. In Alipurduar seat in North Bengal, John Barla of the BJP is leading by 94280 votes against TMC's Dasrath Tirkey.
In Barasat Lok Sabha seat, Kakoli Ghoshdastidar of the TMC is leading by a margin of 69446 votes against Mrinal Kanti Debnath of the BJP. In Arambagh constituency, Aparupa Poddar of the TMC is ahead of her rival Tapan Kumar Ray of the BJP by 11862 votes. In Uluberia seat, Sajda Ahmed of the TMC is leading by 146214 votes against Joy Banerjee of the BJP. In Jadavpur seat, AITC candidate and actor Mimi Chakraborty is leading by 127129 votes against Anupam Hazra of the saffron party.
In Sreerampore, sitting MP and AITC candidate Kalyan Banerjee is leading by 9320 votes against BJP's Debjit Sarkar.
The saffron party, it seems, is cutting a swathe in TMC turf of Bengal, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed 17 poll rallies, with focus on the issues of NRC and the Citizenship bill.
The party is seen making substantial gains in areas close to the India-Bangladesh border, which have a substantial minority population.
In Jangalmahal area too, the BJP can be seen marching ahead of its rivals.
With trends favoring BJP at the Centre as well as in Bengal, the saffron party workers and supporters have burst into celebrations outside its state headquarters here and elsewhere in the districts.
Counting of votes for 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal began at 8 am on Thursday, an election official said. Around 25,000 personnel have been deployed to count votes in 379 counting halls, which are being guarded by 82 companies of Central forces.
Elections in the state were held in seven-phases beginning April 11, with 466 candidates, including 54 women, in the fray. Besides imposing prohibitory order under section 144 within a 100-meter radius of the counting venues, there will be a three-tier security cordon.
Only authorized persons will be allowed to enter the counting venues. For each of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies, there will be a counting observer to monitor the entire process. Other than the returning officer, assistant returning officers and observers, no other people will be allowed to use mobile phones inside the counting venues.
A videographer will document the counting process in each counting centre. All the counting centers have been kept under the strict vigilance of CCTVs. The Election Commission (EC) will declare trends at the end of each round of counting.
