CPM, BJP attack Chandy govt over Dalit student's rape-murder in Kerala

The CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the BJP in Kerala have raised charges of police ineffectiveness in tracking culprits in the Perumbavoor rape and murder case.

The parties are making the case a key issue during the last leg of election campaigning in the state.

Seven days after 30-year-old Dalit law graduate Jisha was found brutally murdered in her one-room house in Perumbavoor near Kochi, senior police officials said the probe was on “the right track” and the investigating team was verifying leads.

While Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala are grappling with the aftermath of the incident in the middle of a high-voltage poll campaign, the LDF has announced a day-night agitation at Perumbavoor from Friday, demanding arrests in the case. CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan severely criticised the police force which he said was clueless on the culprits. “The police don’t have any leads, they only do sketches of the killer,” Balakrishnan said in Idukki.

The BJP leadership has also taken the issue up in election campaigns. The party’s national president Amit Shah said on Thursday that the state government has failed to provide answers to questions raised on the investigation.
