The CPM leadership disowned the alliance it had forged with the Congress in West Bengal during recently held assembly elections.

After a two-day meeting of Polit Bureau, the party declared on Monday that “the electoral tactics evolved in West Bengal was not in consonance with the decision of central committee.”

The party said that the central committee decision based on the political-tactical line “states that there shall be no alliance or understanding with the Congress party”.

However, the Polit Bureau has accommodated the political line of the state unit that an alliance with the Congress is necessary for putting up an effective resistance to the violence unleashed by the ruling Trinamool Congress.

“Under these circumstances, the CPM calls upon the people of West Bengal to unitedly resist this murder of democracy and civil liberties in the state.  The strength of the people’s unity is the answer to meet this unprecedented unleashing of violence,” said the Polit Bureau in its communiqué. Clarifying the Polit Bureau decision on the issue, party general secretary Sitaram Yechury told reporters that united resistance against violence in West Bengal requires unity of entire opposition including Congress. He said that all those who are opposed to the politics of violence should come together.

According to party insiders, the stance of West Bengal unit has been accommodated but only partially.
