CPM splinter group keen on tie-up with AAP

Last Updated 12 January 2014, 20:06 IST

The possibilities of a new electoral tie-up in Kerala emerged on Sunday following reports that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was planning an alliance with the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP).

Top leaders of the RMP – a breakaway group from the CPM, founded by slain leader T P Chandrasekharan – hinted at joining hands with the AAP in the general election in the state.

The RMP leadership said preliminary talks were held with the AAP central leaders in this connection even as the AAP Kerala unit clarified that no discussions were held at the state level. RMP leaders told television channels that the alliance proposed to offer an alternative to politics of Left-driven corporate interests. Reports said the RMP leadership had plans to field candidates from the prospective alliance in all the 20 parliamentary constituencies in the state.

The RMP’s battle against the CPM has intensified since the murder of Chandrasekharan in May 2012. The verdict in the controversial case – that had CPM leaders and functionaries in the list of accused – is expected later in the month.

Ever since the rise of the AAP in the New Delhi election, the party’s prospects in the bipolar political spaces of Kerala have been keenly debated. The party’s membership campaign has gathered steam in Kerala. Eminent writer Sarah Joseph has joined the AAP and with units opening in all 14 districts, the party is set to generate some interest as the state enters the run-up to the election.
