Delhi Assembly dissolved; EC cancels by-polls

President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday dissolved the Delhi Assembly on a recommendation by the Cabinet following which the Election Commission (EC) announced the cancellation of by-polls to three constituencies in the capital.

The poll panel will now decide on when to conduct the Assembly polls.
The Home Ministry issued a notification which said that President Pranab Mukherjee has dissolved the “Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with immediate effect”.

The Cabinet had on Tuesday recommended the dissolution of the Assembly after the BJP decided against forming a government in the capital.

The EC, which had announced by-polls to three constituencies, meanwhile cancelled the elections. It will now start preparations for the fresh elections.

The commission had in October announced that Mehrauli, Tughlakabad and Krishna Nagar would go to polls on November 25. The BJP MLAs had resigned after they were elected to the Lok Sabha in May.
