Last Updated 02 July 2018, 17:14 IST

The Delhi Police have launched a massive hunt for a "tantrik" (sorcerer) in connection with the death of all 11 members of a family under mysterious circumstances on the outskirts of Delhi.

The police have begun a search for the sorcerer after they came to know about his links with the family that was found dead at their residence located at a busy area in Burari's Sant Nagar on Sunday morning.

The sorcerer has been identified as Baba Janegadi.

The police came to know about the sorcerer's links with the family from their friends and relatives.

Though the police are still not clear about the mysterious deaths, it suspects that the sorcerer may have "mislead" some of the elders in the "ill-fated family" to perform certain occult practice in the name of helping them attain "moksha".

The police on Sunday recovered from the family's residence certain handwritten notes, running into 35 pages of a notebook, which purportedly indicated that the family observed some "definitive" spiritual or mystical practices.

Incidentally, the handwritten notes bore "a strong similarity" with the manner in which the eyes and the ears of the deceased family members were tied and gagged.

Some of the notes stated that "one will not die" but attain something "great."

The mystery over the death of the 11-member family shrouded further after the police detected 11 pipes jutting out of a wall at the back of the house.

Interestingly, seven of the pipes are facing downwards while the other four are straight. The family had seven women and four men.

Nine of the 11-member family were found hanging in a line from an iron grill installed for ventilation in the ceiling of their two-storey house, while the other member was hanging with an iron grill of a window inside the same room.

Each of them were blindfolded and gagged with pieces of cloth stuffed in their mouth and hands tied from behind.

One elderly woman of the family, who was in her 70s, was found dead lying on the floor in the house with some injuries around her neck.

"The way 10 of the family members were found hanging was exactly the same manner in which the handwritten notes prescribed. Facts will come out once the Tantrik is traced and apprehended. Search is on for the suspect," a source in the Delhi police crime branch told DH.

Referring to the post-mortem report, a senior police officer said all of the 11 members of the family died due to "ante-mortem hanging".
