Delhi gang-rape convicts fight in jail

Last Updated 20 August 2015, 20:32 IST

Two convicts in the December 16, 2012 gang-rape case exchanged blows in the prison, leaving one of them with a broken hand and injuries in the leg, according to jail sources.
After the alleged attacks on August 15 and 16, injured convict Vinay has now been shifted from Jail No 2 to Jail No 5, source said on Thursday.

Akshay Thakur allegedly assaulted Vinay Sharma after an argument, said a jail insider.
Jail officials, who did not want to be named, said even on earlier occasions Vinay had made such claims about threat to his life in the prison.

Meanwhile, Sharma’s lawyer A P Singh moved an application before Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh saying he was assaulted by the inmates on August 15 and 16 respectively.

Vinay is facing trial in a separate robbery case along with the other three jailed convicts.
“Vinay Sharma was beaten up very badly on August 15 and 16 by other inmates of the jail,” the plea said, adding that five to six inmates, who allegedly assaulted him, had also threatened to kill him.

The counsel said the court has called for a report from the jail authorities on August 25 on Vinay’s plea. The court is currently hearing the final arguments in the robbery case.
A special fast track court had earlier awarded death penalty to four convicts — Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh — in the gang-rape and murder case which was later confirmed by the Delhi High Court. Their appeals are pending before the Supreme Court.
