The Haryana Police on Monday arrested eight people in connection with the rape and murder of a 28-year-old mentally-challenged Nepalese woman.

The ninth accused in the case that has caused outrage and revulsion across the country committed suicide. The brutality of the incident had evoked gory memories of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape.

One of the accused booked by the cops is a native of Nepal.

Stones and sharp objects were shoved into the victim’s body, said the police. Condoms were also found inside her vagina. Her skull was smashed with a heavy blunt object, her uterus, abdomen and intestines torn after the accused took turns to rape her. She was then thrown off a high wall. Animals devoured parts of her body.

The woman had gone missing on February 1 and her badly mutilated body was found about 18 km from Rohtak in Haryana along the highway on February 4. The girl’s family, which struggles to make ends meet, has accused the police of delayed action.

The police said the ninth accused, 22-year-old Sombir Kumar, who had been on the run ever since the incident came to light, committed suicide late on Monday by consuming poison. He fled to Delhi where he is said to have committed suicide. Sombir worked in a factory in Rohtak. All the accused have confessed to their crime.

Haryana Director General of Police Yashpal Singhal said on Monday: “If any lapse on the part of police is found, action will be taken against them.”

The police said the accused Nepalese youth worked at a shop owned by another accused in the case.

The victim had come from Nepal two months ago for treatment and had been staying with her sister in Chinyot Colony in Rohtak. Her sister works as a domestic help.

The autopsy report said damage to the brain along with the rupture of vagina, rectum and anus caused the death.

The accused have been identified as Sombir, Rajesh alias Ghuchru, Sunil alias Shilla, Sarwar alias Billu, Manbir, Sunil alias Maddha, Pawan and Parmod alias Padam.
