Delhiites bask in rain

Last Updated 28 August 2014, 20:25 IST

Heavy rain accompanied by strong wind lashed Delhi on Thursday, a welcome respite from sultry and hot weather though traffic was thrown out of gear due to waterlogging in many areas.

The city received 6.4 mm rain till 5:30 pm, said a Meteorological Department official. Heavy showers were witnessed in east, south and central Delhi. Connaught Place seemed flooded.

Thursday had started on a sunny note with the maximum temperature touching 37 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season’s average. But with sudden thundershowers, the mercury took a dip. Temperature at 6.10 pm slipped to 26 degrees.

“Good rain in the Hauz Khas area of Delhi. Hope other parts are enjoying that as well. Finally some relief,” a Twitter user said.

Traffic was affected due to waterlogging at Modi Mill flyover, R K Ashram Marg Metro station, Sadar Bazar Thana Road, Boulevard Road near ISBT, Bhagwan Das Road and West Point on Mathura Road towards Supreme Court.

Areas like Lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Govindpuri were affected too, Delhi Traffic Police said.

Several flights were also delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. “The delay is due to light showers in Delhi,” tweeted IndiGo Airlines.
