Despite sunny days, Kashmir shivers with cold

Despite sunny days, cold wave conditions continued across Kashmir and Ladakh region on Tuesday with Kargil recording bone-chilling minus 15 degrees Census.

A MeT Department official said minimum temperature plummeted minus 15.2 degrees Celsius in Kargil town of frontier Ladakh region while neighbouring Leh town recorded a low of minus 8.9 degrees.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 2 degrees Celsius while Jammu city recorded a low of 7.8 degrees Celsius, he said. World famous skiing resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius.

The tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, which also serves as a base camp during annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a low of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius.

With temperatures remaining below freezing point, the fringes of the famous Dal lake and other water bodies in Srinagar continued to form a thin layer of ice in the night hours. The 40-day long ongoing period of extreme cold in the valley, known locally as the 'Chillai Kalan' that started on December 21 will end on January 31.
