DGCA asks airlines to cap fares to, from Kerala

The civil aviation regulator has asked airlines to cap maximum fare around Rs 10,000 on longer routes, around Rs 8,000 on shorter routes to and from Kerala and nearby airports.

"Spike in airfare on few routes have been observed. Airlines concerned are advised to cap the airfare on these flights," an official statement from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Friday even as it convened a meeting with top management of domestic airlines.

DGCA has asked the airlines to mount additional flights. The Kochi airport has been shut till Sunday following heavy rain.

"Scheduled domestic airlines have also been advised to ensure that airfares for flights to/from Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode and nearby airports ie Mangaluru and Coimbatore are kept at an optimal level, proportionate to sector distance so that travelling public is not inconvenienced," it said.

"Out of the 71 arrivals and 74 departures of scheduled domestic airlines to and from Kochi, 23 arrivals and 24 departures have been rescheduled and additional 19 arrivals and departures have been mounted to and from Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Coimbatore airports," it said.

Nine foreign carriers operating from Kochi have also rescheduled their flights from Thiruvananthapuram.
