The ruling Aam Aadmi Party’s legislator from Jangpura M S Dhir will be the party’s candidate for the Speaker’s post in the Delhi Assembly for which an election is likely to held on January 3, a party leader said.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told reporters that the Congress legislator from Seelampur Mateen Ahmed would be Pro tem Speaker. He said the AAP first suggested the name of senior BJP leader and Janakpuri MLA Jagdish Mukhi for the post of pro-tem speaker but he declined to take up the task. “We later suggested the name of Shoaib Iqbal (Janata Dal-United legislator from Matia Mahal) who also did not want to take up the post,” said Kejriwal.

“Finally, we suggested the name of Mateen Ahmed who agreed,” he said
Ahmed  will administer the oath of office to all the legislators on the opening day of the Assembly on January 1.

The Speaker’s election will be held a day after the trust vote sought by the government in the Assembly.
