DMK hits back at Kamal for attacking Stalin

Last Updated 18 February 2019, 16:26 IST

The DMK on Monday fielded party chief M K Stalin’s son and actor Udayanidhi to attack actor-politician Kamal Haasan for his comments that the DMK president “copied my (Kamal's) idea” of holding grama sabhas in Tamil Nadu.

While Stalin chose not to respond to Kamal Haasan’s statement on Sunday by indicating that he would not take the actor seriously, his son Udayanidhi tweeted pictures of his father holding grama sabhas in 2008 and 2014.

“These pictures are dedicated to Kamal Haasan sir who has been blabbering that he invented grama sabha meetings,” Udayanidhi tweeted on Monday.

Hours later, DMK MLA and Stalin’s close confidante, J Anbalagan also launched a scathing attack on the actor, saying one should not be surprised even if Kamal Haasan claims he was the one who mooted the idea of grama sabhas to Mahatma Gandhi.

DMK fielding Udayanidhi and second-rung leaders to respond to Kamal Haasan is a clear indication it does not take the actor seriously and one should not expect the top brass to respond.

“One thing I learned in the past year after launching my political party is that politicians should give a hearing to the people. Grama sabhas have existed for long but aren’t you ashamed of copying it (holding of such sabhas) from a child who has just take a plunge in politics (Kamal Haasan)?” the actor had asked on Sunday.

The DMK and Kamal Haasan were seen as ideological partners, but both have been attacking each other since their audience seem to be the same— those who subscribe to Dravidian ideology.
