After the Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised Rs 4.8 crore through online donation, out of which around Rs 3 crore poured in within eight days of government formation.
The AAP, by a conservative estimate, plans to raise Rs 30-35 crore through online donations before the Lok Sabha elections — a monthly target of more than Rs 7 crore, said party sources. Top party functionaries, however, say they have not planned to cap donations. From India alone the party has raised Rs 3.7 crore. The top five foreign donor countries are the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Qatar — accounting for donations up to Rs 70 lakh.
“We will accept donations based on the number of Lok Sabha seats we plan to contest,” said Ankit Lal, the AAP’s IT administrator and national council member, in reply to whether the party’s decision to contest the LS polls could be based on the funds it is able to raise.
On Saturday, the AAP had announced that it would contest the 2014 LS polls “from most of the seats in most of the states” without projecting any prime ministerial candidate. Even on Sunday, after the national executive meeting, the party maintained its position, adding that it would contest all 90 Assembly seats in Haryana.
