Unidentified miscreants carried out two bomb blasts in a primary school on Wednesday in South Assam's Hailakandi district, sharing boundary with Mizoram.

Two schools were similarly attacked by miscreants in neighbouring Cachar district in October and November last year when tension prevailed on the inter-state border.

Miscreants triggered two blasts at the premises of Muliwala Lower Primary School on the Assam side of the inter-state border in Hailakandi at around 1.30 am on Wednesday. The blasts badly damaged the school building as well as a drinking water reservoir and an under-construction boy's toilet, said a statement issued by Hailakandi district administration.

The damaged school is located near Assam- Mizoram border about 12 km away from Ramnathpur Police Station, it further said.

Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi, Megh Nidhi Dahal and Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath visited the blast site and took stock of the situation.

"Though the situation is tense, it is under control. Security has been beefed up following the incident," said the statement.
