West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Thursday triggered a fresh controversy by alleging that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is trying to create a “Greater Bangladesh” by raising slogans of ‘Jai Bangla’ in public rallies.
The Bengal BJP chief shared a poster on his official Facebook page which stated “ This honorable person (Mamata) is fighting for the aim of setting up a greater Bangladesh.”
Taking a dig at the Chief Minister’s use of the slogan ‘Jai Bangla’, the poster included a sentence that read - “ Islamic Bangladesh’s national slogan: Jai Bangla.”
The poster also featured a photo of a Bangladeshi actor taking part in Trinamool Congress' (TMC’s) campaign and a Bangladeshi cricketer inaugurating a Durga Puja event organised by a TMC MLA in North Kolkata.
The development comes days after the Chief Minister refused to deliver a speech at an event at the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, which was held to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, after slogans of Jai Shree Ram were raised by a section of the audience. The incident had taken place in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“This is a government program and not the programme of some political party. There should be some dignity. You should not insult someone after inviting that person. In protest against this, I will not say anything here. Jai Hind. Jai Bangla,” Mamata had said at the event.
Reacting to the development, senior TMC MP Sougata Roy accused the BJP of trying to “import its communal brand of politics” in Bengal.
“Such comments are worthy of response. We strongly condemn BJP’s effort to import its brand of divisive and communal politics in Bengal,” said Roy,
Taking potshots at Ghosh, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that “possibly Dilip Ghosh is suffering from tension and inferiority complex as BJP in Bengal has turned into grater TMC by inducting rejected TMC leaders.”
