Ensure regular in-service training of teachers, else face music: CBSE to schools

Schools which are not regularly nominating their teachers for various capacity building programmes may face the music at the time of getting an extension of their affiliation with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The board has decided to look into the in-service training records of the schools while considering their applications for extension of affiliation.

This comes after the board noted that many of the schools affiliated to it do not regularly send their teachers for in service training organised by government bodies.

Many of the schools also do nominate their teachers for taking part in various capacity building programmes organised by the seven centres of excellence set up for the purpose in different parts of the country.

“It's violation of the affiliation bye-laws,” official sources told DH.

As per provisions of the bye-laws, it is mandatory for all affiliated schools to organise capacity building training programmes for all its teachers at least once every year in association with the teachers training institutes, either recognized by the respective State Governments or the Central Government, the official added.

For this, the CBSE has set up seven centres of excellence which offers “a systematic” in-service training programmes for capacity building programmes for the teachers of the affiliated schools.

“However, it has been noted that the affiliated schools are not sponsoring or nominating their teachers regularly for capacity building programme as per the provisions of the affiliation bye-laws,” the official added.

These centres of excellence are located at Gurugram, Haryana; Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh; Kolkata, West Bengal; Kochi, Kerala; Panchkula, Haryana and Pune, Maharashtra.
    
“A systematic in-service training of teachers is necessary to enhance the quality of the teachers. This brings in a qualitative change in the attitude of the teachers. It is a key element in improving school education and promoting students development,” the official said.

With many of the schools remaining ignorant to the significance of the in-service training programmes,  a circular has been issued to the heads of all affiliated schools, directing them to ensure that their teachers undergo in-service training at government approved institutions as stipulated in the affiliation bye laws.
  
“All applications for extension of provisional affiliation will be considered with reference to the school’s record of nominating its teachers for training as per the provisions of affiliation bye-laws,” the CBSE told the schools in its circular last week.
