Flood situation grim in Assam, one dead

Even as the flood situation in Assam turned grim once again on Sunday with more heavy rain, one person died in the early hours due to flood in Narayanpur of Lakhimpur district.

Nearly 1.80 lakh people are affected in the state due to flash floods. Seven districts of the state are still flood ravaged.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Jorhat. Its tributaries – the Dikhow and the Dhansiri are also flowing above the danger mark. About 267 villages are inundated and nearly 14,000 hectares of agricultural land is under flood waters.

A total of 25 relief camps across the state are housing about 5,000 people displaced by floods. SDRF and NDRF units have been sent to vulnerable areas, official sources said. Damage of infrastructure has been reported from Morigaon, Golaghat and Lakhimpur districts, the  sources added.
