Former Gujarat cadre IAS officer of 1985 batch, Sanjay Gupta, was on Thursday evening arrested by Gujarat Police’s CID-crime branch in Gandhinagar.

As per the reports, Gupta was arrested for irregularities worth Rs 113-crore in Ahmedabad metro rail project, of which he was the chairman from 2011 till 2013.

Additional DGP of CID Crime Meera Ram Niwas has investigated the case and Gupta was arrested based on her findings. He is expected to be produced before the court on Friday morning.

Gupta has in the past attributed to have played a critical role in Gujarat’s successful foray in laying over 2000-km natural gas grid in the state and growth of one of the most successful state-owned unit Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Limited. He was also instrumental in setting up Science City project during former chief minister Keshubhai Patel’s regime.

However, Gupta seemed to have rubbed current Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the wrong side, who had shifted Gupta from being MD of GSPC to Sangeet Natak Akademi. Gupta was blamed for fighting the demands of Niko Resources of Canada over ownership of an 18-km inter-connect pipeline in South Gujarat.
