Goa home minister's family faces threat, says top cop

Last Updated 22 September 2010, 14:28 IST

"I can't discuss what kind of threats they were but we have the inputs because of which adequate security was provided to home minister's family, which is subject to review after some days," Bassi said.

The DGP was talking to media after attending a high level meeting on law and order which was chaired by Chief Minister Digamber Kamat. Bassi, however, refused to divulge whether the threat is from terrorist organisation or local groups.

The state police this week had provided personal security officer (PSO) to Naik's sons Roy and Ritesh, the DGP confirmed. Roy has been in news after Israeli drug peddler Atala alias Yaniv Benaim's girlfriend Lucky Farmhouse had alleged his links with the drug mafia in the state.

A notorious criminal Micheal Fernandes during his interrogation confessed that he was given the contract to kill Roy. "The threat is to entire family and not to Naik alone," the DGP clarified responding to a question.

Bassi, however, refused to divulge the kind of security provided to them. Police sources said Naik's own security was upgraded from Z to Z plus category in May this year.

The ploy to kill Roy was exposed following arrest of Micheal along with six others in a robbery case. During the police interrogation, Micheal reportedly confessed that he was given supari (contract) to kill Roy.

Police have kept the details of the interrogation under wraps. Goa police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande said he was not willing to comment on the issue, adding "I am not aware about it." Micheal,  who has 35 different cases registered against him, also confessed to have killed two people in Gujarat and Hyderbad.
