Gujarat Lokayukta may be changed

Last Updated 06 September 2011, 17:09 IST

Senior BJP leader L K Advani and leader of Lok Sabha Pranab Mukherjee from Congress held consultations early this week to defuse the volatile situation, while the BJP disrupted Parliament proceedings for the fourth days in succession demanding recall of the Gujarat Governor.

Sources told Deccan Herald that the Centre might advise Governor Kamla Beniwal to consult the state council of ministers on the issue.

The governor earned the ire of BJP strongman and Chief Minister Narendra Modi  by appointing Justice R A Mehta, retired judge, as Lokayukta without consulting him.

State unit against move

The Gujarat Congress is against the Governor reversing the appointment as it would be seen as a political victory for Modi, whom it wants to unseat in the next Assembly polls.

The parliamentarians  from the Congress and the BJP had heated arguments in the corridors of Parliament on Tuesday, while both houses were adjourned for the day.

The Samajwadi Party also disapproved the manner in which the Gujarat Lokayukta was imposed by the Governor, but opposed Parliament proceedings being disrupted.

Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav said the appointment goes against the tenets of federal structure of the country.

The strong stand of the BJP MPs against the appointment of a Modi-baiter as Lokayukta amply reflects the Gujarat Chief Minister’s influence over the party’s central leadership.
