Delhi Police said Saturday that the 22-year-old Subhash shot dead a class 12 girl student the day before as she had spurned his marriage proposal, telling him that she was more educated.

Police said Subhash had proposed marriage to 18-year-old Pinki even shortly before shooting her dead.

Pinky, was shot dead at her house in Munirka area of south Delhi Friday morning.
Friday evening, police arrested the girl's distant relative Subhash from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat area.

"Subhash met Pinky at a marriage ceremony a few years back, and they grew to be closely acquainted. The girl later started keeping her distance as she was more educated than him," Deputy Commissioner of Police B.S. Jaiswal said.

Subhash, who has studied up to class eight, reached the victim's house at about 10 a.m. Friday. Once he was sure the parents had left the house, he entered the girl's room and  bolted the door from within.

When he started confronting the girl, she objected to his presence in the house. He then whipped out his country-made gun, concealed in a paper bag, and shot the girl on the chest at close range.

Pinki's father Pritam is a plumber and mother Rani a domestic help. At the time of the incident, both had gone to work at the Jawaharlal Nehru University nearby.

Pinki was the couple's only child, and the family looked forward to the results of her class 12 examination.
