Heavy rain lashes Maharashtra as monsoon revives

Last Updated 20 August 2017, 19:46 IST

Heavy rain lashed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and elsewhere in Maharashtra, including the rain-starved Marathwada region that was heading towards drought.

Being a Sunday, the affect was not felt much on the road and rail transport; however, since it was the last Sunday before Ganesh Utsav, people could not complete their shopping. The rain over the weekend signals the revival of southwest monsoon in Maharashtra.

The wet spell is likely to continue on Monday and Tuesday, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD and private weather forecast agency Skymet Weather.

From Saturday night to Sunday evening, Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad and Palghar received an average of over 100 mm rainfall. At several places in Sion–Dadar in Mumbai waterlogging was reported.

In Marathwada, Nanded and Parbhani received nearly 200 mm rainfall and there were reports of three buses getting stranded. The passengers were rescued safely. Latur district received over 150 mm rainfall. Osmanabad received good rainfall after almost two months, while Beed received rainfall after almost a month’s time.

Reports of good rainfall also reached here from Nashik in North Maharashtra and Pune in Western Maharashtra.

According to Skymet Weather, these conditions can be attributed to a low pressure area which is seen lying over Vidarbha and adjoining areas. This system is further likely to move in a West direction. Due to the presence of this weather system, moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers will continue to lash many places over Vidarbha, Konkan and Goa region.

The lakes that supply water to Mumbai, too, received good rainfall. Seven lakes have already crossed 92% of their total storage capacity. Except for the two lakes that are located in Mumbai region, Tulsi and Vihar, the five lakes that are in Palghar and Thane regions have received more than average rainfall. While Modak Sagar received 2,354 mm rainfall last monsoon, this year it is slightly better with 2,389 mm; in the case of Tansa, 2,217 mm rainfall has been recorded as opposed to 2,055 mm last year.
