Hi-tech security for 76 railway stations

Last Updated 15 February 2012, 18:49 IST

High-tech security systems will start functioning at 76 railway stations before the end of March this year. The railway ministry has said that these stations were selected for the first phase of the modernisation of security at stations.

The ministry is providing Integrated Security System to 202 “important and sensitive” stations in the first phase. The remaining 126 stations will get this system next year, in 2012-2013.

This system provides for multiple screening and checking of passengers right from the point of entry. There will be dedicated control rooms at strategic locations for round-the-clock monitoring through the Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) based surveillance system. The CCTV system will be installed in the station area to cover the entire station premises including concourse, waiting halls, platforms, over-bridges etc, said the ministry.

The CCTV system will be internet protocol-based and will have important video analytics which will give automatic signals in case of suspected baggage, excessive crowd, intrusion by unauthorised persons etc.

However, for personal screening, hand-held metal detectors and doorframe metal detectors would be in use. Frisking would be done in suspected cases. Baggage screening will be done through large size X-Ray machines. Bomb Detection and Disposal System will be available with latest equipment at important stations.

Automatic vehicle scanner will be provided at entry gates from where vehicles enter into the station premises.

A scanner will be integrated into the Control Room meant for surveillance. Trained Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel are being deployed to ensure proper functioning of the Integrated Security System.

Boundary wall along with barbed wall fencing will be provided to station premises to prohibit unauthorised entry or exit.
