A Hindi teacher from Kurnool town in Andhra Pradesh attacked a student with a knife at her house for reportedly turning down a marriage proposal. Later, he slit his own throat with the blade. Locals then tied the teacher to a tree and thrashed him. Both attacker and victim are now out of danger.

Sankar, 30, a Vidya Volunteer (working as a teacher for consolidated pay) was later arrested by the police. The Education Department immediately removed him from the job. He was teaching Hindi for classes VIII, IX and X at Rockwood High School.

According to Yugandhar Babu, Kurnool Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sankar went to the Class IX girl’s home in a drunken condition. He had been persuading the 14-year-old girl and her parents to agree to marriage for the last few weeks. However, the family, who belong to a washerman community, warned him against harboring such hopes.

Sankar then learned that the girl’s parents were away on work and barged into her house in Bangarupet around 9 a.m. He had a knife with him. The girl and her younger brother were at home. Sankar then asked the boy to go out. He reportedly had an altercation with the minor girl following which he pulled out the knife and slashed her throat. Neighbours rushed to the home, responding to screams from the victim. Sankar then slit his own throat.

While some neighbours rushed the girl to the hospital, other villagers pulled Sankar out of the house and tied him to a tree. They thrashed him before the police arrived and took him to the station.

State Human Resources Minister G Srinivasa Rao said he has taken serious note of the incident and has directed district officials to ensure that Sankar gets the most stringent punishment possible.
