'India to attract $100 bn investment in telecom sector'

Telecom Industry and government alliance could help India to attract $100 billion investment by 2022 in the telecom sector, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundarajan said on Thursday.

Speaking at India Mobile Congress-2018 event in New Delhi, she said it is estimated that India could attract $100 billion by 2022 and the government is working on it.

The National Digital Communication Policy 2018 would help to push investment in the sector, she added.

The government is giving all support to the industry in terms of rationalising levies, making available of sufficient spectrum and removing hurdles to promote local manufacturing, she said.

Besides, the government has taken a number of reforms in the sector including doubling of fibre, base trans-receiver stations, public data office and removing of cascading taxation, she added.

India emerged as the fastest growing digital society in the world in social media, digital banking and digital delivery, she said adding that data growth in India was 2000 % over last year.

The Department of Telecom, Ministry of Electronics and IT and the Department of science and technology working on the harness of 5G technology, she said.
