India has started the process of sending a formal request to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to extradite fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi, who has been accused of colluding with his nephew diamantaire, Mehul Choksi, to defraud PNB of Rs 14,000 crore.

The CBI has sent to the Ministry of External Affairs the formal request for extradition of Choksi from Antigua, sources in New Delhi said on Friday. They added that the MEA was currently in the process of conveying it to the authorities in Antigua and Barbuda.

India earlier this week sent its envoy to Guyana, V Mahalingam, to Antigua and Barbuda to meet the officials of the government of the West Indies nation and to request them to detain Choksi and prevent it from fleeing by land, air and sea.
