Inmates of Byculla jail hospitalised

At least 50 inmates of the Byculla jail has been admitted to the government-run Sir JJ Hospital following vomiting, abdominal pain and uneasiness due to suspected food poisoning on Friday.

Some more patients are being brought in.

The JJ Hospital has been virtually turned into a fortress in the wake of undertrial prisoners being admitted to the hospital.

The Byculla jail has 390 male and 210 female inmates.

Dr Wiqar Shaikh, Professor and head of Unit 5, is heading the medical treatment team.

Former media baron Peter Mukerjea's estranged wife Indrani Mukerjea nee Bora too is an inmate of the Byculla jail, however, so far, there has not been any reports of her medication.

What exactly led to the condition is being investigated.
