Internet existed in 'Mahabharata' period: Tripura CM Biplab Deb

Tripura Chief Minister Bipbalb Kumar Deb

Tripura Chief Minister Bipbab Kumar Deb on Tuesday said that internet and satellite communication existed during the  'Mahabharata' period. Speaking at a public function in Agartala, he asserted that it is wrong to say that it was Europeans and Americans who invented those technologies.

"During the 'Mahabharata' period, Sanjaya was narrating to Dhritarashtra the happenings in the war. What does that mean? The technology was there, the internet was there and the satellite was there. How else could he see it? At that time, in this country technology existed... You [the Europeans and Americans] did not invent this first but it existed millions of years ago in this country," he said.

Twitterverse, as usual, took a dig at Deb. A right-wing thinker Anand Ranganathan criticised the comment saying that "This government might go down in history as one with the BEST collection of muppets EVER given a job to run the nation." He added his tweet to the thread which is the collection of BJP leaders controversial takes on science. The thread starts with PM Modi's comment that genetic science existed during the days of 'Mahabharat'.

An accountant Mubashir came to 'help' Deb by providing evidence of  Skype usage during 'Mahabharat'. He tweeted a video song from the 1957 Telugu movie 'Mayabazar starring N. T. Rama Rao and Savitri.

Deb on Wednesday told ANI that "narrow minded people find it tough to believe this. They want to belittle their own nation & think highly of other countries. Believe the truth. Don't get confused & don't confuse others."  Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy stepped in to defend Deb by saying that CM's "observations about the happenings of the Puranic period are topical."

BJP, led by Deb, who was its state president stormed into power in Tripura in March after defeating decades-long rule by CPI(M).
