Justice Goel appointed as chairman NGT

Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, who never shied of passing significant orders on contentious issues, was on Friday appointed as chairman of the National Green Tribunal on the date he superannuated as the Supreme Court judge, reports DHNS from New Delhi.

The Appointment Committee of Cabinet approved the proposal for appointment of Justice Goel as the NGT chairman for a period of five years or till the age of 70 years, a notification stated.

The post was lying vacant after retirement of Justice Swatanter Kumar in December, last.Justice Goel had on March 20 passed the judgement, putting safeguards on arrest of private persons and government officers under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, triggering outrage among the political parties and social groups. He, along with Justice U U Lalit in the bench, subsequently, agreed to reconsider the decision on the central government's plea but declined a request to stay the operation of the directions.
