Displaying political courtesy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday drove to Kauvery Hospital here to meet DMK president M Karunanidhi, whose health suffered a “transient setback” on Sunday evening.

Palaniswami, his deputy O Panneerselvam and cabinet colleagues C Ve Shanmugam, K A Sengottaiyan and C Vijayabhaskar met DMK Working President M K Stalin and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and enquired about Karunanidhi's health.

Later, Palaniswami and Panneerselvam were ushered into the ICU, where Karunanidhi is under round-the-clock monitoring of a team of expert doctors. The health of Karunanidhi suffered a temporary setback on Sunday evening, but his vital parameters slowly limped back to normalcy with active medical support.

“I met DMK president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi at the ICU of the hospital along with deputy CM O Panneerselvam. Stalin and Kanimozhi were present when we
visited the DMK chief,” Palaniswami told reporters outside the hospital.

“Karunanidhi is stable,” the Chief Minister said. DMK leaders also maintained that Karunanidhi's vital parameters were normal on Monday, notwithstanding the setback the previous day.

“There was a transient setback in the clinical condition of Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi. With active medical support, his vital signs are normalising. He continues to be closely monitored and treated by the panel of expert doctors,” Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director, Kauvery Hospitals, said in the bulletin issued on Sunday night.

High drama prevailed outside the Kauvery Hospital on Sunday evening after news trickled in that Karunanidhi’s health has suffered a setback. As hundreds of DMK cadre thronged the hospital area, the police presence was strengthened and the men in khaki asked outpatients to leave the hospital premises.

Karunanidhi (94) was rushed to Kauvery Hospital in the wee hours of Saturday after his blood pressure (BP) dropped. The DMK chief was receiving treatment at his residence for the past two years and doctors noticed a “slight decline” in his health on Thursday evening.

The five-time Tamil Nadu chief minister is also being treated for urinary tract infection and other age-related illness. Karunanidhi has been confined to his home since October 2016 and moves out only for hospital visits to change his tracheostomy tube every six months.
