KCR, Akhilesh discuss Front in Hyd; roping in Cong kept open

In a significant development, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is forging an alternative front at the national level, softened his opposition to the Congress and declared that no one is untouchable.

KCR's stance came at a joint press conference with Samajwadi Party chief and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav, here on Wednesday.

The two leaders said they had discussed the political situation in the country and the need to bring together like-minded parties to herald a new era of politics in the country.

“We are keeping all options open. We are in the process of building a consensus with an aim to bring about a qualitative change in the country’s politics and governance,” KCR said. In a month or two, a complete agenda will be placed before the country, the Telangana CM said, adding that these efforts are not aimed at the 2019 elections. Without naming the parties, KCR said he was in touch with some leaders and would soon visit Delhi to meet them as part of efforts to build a consensus on the agenda.
Akhilesh lauded KCR’s efforts but evaded a reply to a question whether the proposed front would have his friend Rahul Gandhi as a partner. He criticised the BJP government and said it had failed to fulfill the promises made to the people. He also pooh-poohed the claims of the NDA that the demonetisation would reform the country. He pointed out that the NDA is now left with a few partners.

'Good beginning'

Pledging his support to KCR’s initiative, Yadav said, “Only the regional parties and regional leaders can halt the juggernaut of BJP. A good beginning for change was made recently when we defeated BJP in the constituencies represented by the chief minister and deputy chief minister in Uttar Pradesh with the support of BSP and others. The people of the country are looking for an alternative and we support it.”
KCR, Telangana Rashtra Samithi founder president, has so far met Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, JD (S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and his son H D Kumaraswamy and DMK working President M K Stalin. KCR had originally proposed a non-Congress, non-BJP front.
