Kerala Oppn slams CM in Assembly

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was in the line of fire of the opposition parties on Wednesday over alleged links between his personal assistant and a woman arrested over financial fraud charges.

CPM MLA E P Jayarajan raised the issue in the Legislative Assembly, pointing to reports in certain sections of the media that Chandy’s PA Tenny Joppan had repeated telephonic conversations with Sarita S Nair, who was arrested earlier this month.

According to a television channel report, Joppan had called Sarita from his mobile phone and the landline at the chief minister’s residence.

The woman had, along with an accomplice, allegedly conned people out of crores of rupees after promising them stakes in solar-energy plants and windmill-energy farms. Raising serious concern over the alleged involvement of the chief minister’s office in the case, the opposition parties demanded an explanation.
The Assembly session also witnessed protests from the opposition parties over the government’s plan to privatise water distribution in the state.

There was no respite for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government from its own fold either, with a group of UDF MLAs also lining up against creation of the new company and communicating their concerns to the CM.
