Kerala police accused of spying on e-mails

Reports that the Kerala Police are snooping on e-mails of around 260 prominent individuals belonging to the Muslim community, including politicians and journalists, have stirred up a hornet’s nest.

Reacting to reports, Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly V S Achuthanandan said e-mail snooping is an interference in the privacy of citizen and smacks of imperialist and fascist tendencies.

“Chief Minister Oommen Chandy should clarify as to whether mails of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders like P V Abdul Wahab and Abdul Samad Samadhani were spied following any proof that they were indulging in anti-national activities,” Achuthanandan said.

It is a tendency in some of the Western countries to closely scrutinise members of Muslim community because of their religion.
