Kerala VC removed for wrong claim in bio-data

Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit today removed the Vice-Chancellor of Kottayam-based Mahatma Gandhi University, Dr A V George, for alleged misrepresentation in the bio-data submitted by him for getting the top post.

This is the first time that the Vice-Chancellor of a university is being removed in the state before the expiry of the term.

Based on a government report, Dikshit in her capacity as the Chancellor signed the order removing Dr George, Raj Bhavan sources said.

The state Government had earlier forwarded the report of the Higher Education Secretary, who was asked to examine the complaint.

George, a geologist, had allegedly claimed in his biodata that he had worked as Head of the Department at a Central University. It was, however, found out that he had worked only on deputation at the Central University of Kerala at Kasargode.

The VC had earlier ran into trouble with a local Congress leader at Kaviyur near Tiruvalla, who complained to the then Governor Nikhil Kumar seeking his removal for alleged misrepresentation.

Though George had moved the High Court on the issue, it had referred the matter back to the Governor to take a decision.

The order will be forwarded to the High Court, where the matter is pending.

George had sought a meeting with Dikshit this morning, but his request was turned down.

Coming out of the Raj Bhavan, George said he was not aware of what actually happened and he would meet the media later in the day.
