Kerala's master magician to enact stories from classic

Gopinath Muthukad

The programme, 'Vismaya Malhar', has been designed as a fusion of literature, history, music and fantasy presented through the medium of magic, Muthukad said.

'Aithiyamala' is a compendium of legends and lores compiled by writer Kottarathil Sankunni a century ago. It is a rare classic with stories relating to people known for their legendary feats.

"The idea of transforming some of such characters through the medium of magic struck me when I re-read the work recently," said Muthukad, who will play the role of Kaipuzha Thampan, a magician appearing in Sankunni's stories.
A treasure-house of legends, it goes to Sankunni's credit to have collected, compiled and printed these tales. "We are lucky to have such a classic collection throwing valuable light into history, culture, rich traditions and customs of Kerala," he said, adding that the magical project on Aithihyamala is a tribute to Sankunni on the 100th year of publication of the classic.

"For me magic is not just for entertainment. Magic can be an effective medium to spread messages," Muthukad, who has organised magic shows to promote themes like national integration, added.
