Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar transferred

Last Updated 19 February 2019, 09:05 IST

Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar has been transferred ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A notification issued by the West Bengal Government on Tuesday stated that Kumar has been assigned the post of ADG of state CID.

The notification also stated that Anuj Sharma, who is currently the ADG (Law and Order) of West Bengal Police will replace Kumar as the next Commissioner of Kolkata Police.

The transfers have been made as per the norms of the Election Commission which states that police officers involved in poll duty cannot be in the same post for more than three years.

The development comes nearly three weeks after Kumar was at the centre of a raging controversy after an unprecedented standoff took place between Kolkata Police and CBI when the Central agency tried to question Kumar at his residence in relation to the chit fund scam.

Within an hour after a CBI team reached near Kumar’s residence in Kolkata on February 3 they were intercepted by a large police contingent.

The CBI officials were virtually pushed into a vehicle and taken to a nearby police station. They were briefly detained before being released.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sat on a three-day long dharna in Central Kolkata against the CBI’s actions. CBI had grilled Kumar in Shillong earlier this month regarding the chit fund scam.
