LDF boycotts governor speech over Mani scam

The CPM-led opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Friday boycotted Governor P Sathasivam’s policy address in the Assembly, raising the pitch of its protest against Kerala’s corruption-scandal-hit Finance Minister K M Mani.

The address signalled the commencement of the budget session of the Assembly.
The Opposition legislators arrived at the Assembly holding banners and placards with messages demanding the resignation of Mani, who is facing probe into allegations of having accepted bribe from bar-owners in connection with the issuance of licences.

Ahead of the governor’s address, Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan pointed out that it was set to detail the policies of a government that had a corruption-hit minister. Sathasivam said he would “consider” the objection.

As the governor commenced his address, the Opposition members staged a walk-out, raising slogans against the minister. Achuthanandan told reporters outside the Assembly complex that the governor’s address pertained to policies of a corruption-tainted government.

Demand reiterated

Later, LDF leaders met the governor and reiterated their demand that Mani not be allowed to present the state Budget, scheduled on March 13. The governor is expected to discuss the demand with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The Opposition will organise a protest march to the Assembly complex in this connection on March 13. LDF-affiliated activists from across the state are expected to be in the city for the protest.
