Maharashtra requests Centre to hand over Rajan

Last Updated 26 October 2015, 20:24 IST

Hours after the arrest of fugitive underworld don Chhota Rajan in Indonesia, the Maharashtra government has decided to request the Centre to hand over the wanted criminal to the Mumbai Police for investigations.

However, there are certain important issues like whether Rajan is deported or extradited. If that happens, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) would like to carry out his interrogation.

Besides, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officials, too, will speak to him on various aspects, including the March 12, 1993 serial blasts case.

“He is wanted for several cases in Mumbai and accordingly, we would be requesting the Centre to hand him over to us first,” Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde said.
The government, he said, would also make  a compilation of cases against him and the current status of those cases.

The last big case against him was the murder of journalist-writer J Dey. “He is a big catch,” said IPS officer-turned-politician P K Jain.

“Of late, we know, he has been operating from South East Asia…his interrogation would be useful,” said former Mumbai Police chief Dr P S Pasricha.
