A 45-year-old man from the border town of Jalalabad in Punjab spent lakhs of rupees to get back his Samsung mobile phone that cost him Rs 6,500 and was stolen in 2015.

Harpeet Mehami said it was an unending fight not just to get back his stolen mobile phone, but against "wrongdoing".

Last week, he finally got back his stolen mobile phone.

Mehmani claimed he spent in excess of Rs 3 lakh on litigation in courts, including at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and travelling since October 2015 when someone fled with his mobile from his shop.

He first encountered resistance at the local police station where he had gone to lodge an FIR. The police personnel there refused to lodge an FIR.

Mehmani, who is an RTI activist, then filed a complaint before a judicial magistrate seeking respite. The magistrate asked the police to register a case. That proved futile.

The local police disposed of the case in the next couple of days putting the matter to an end.

Mehami then moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh for justice in 2016.

Meanwhile, a team under the guidance of the senior superintendent of police of Fazilka managed to find Menmani's stolen phone.

The stolen mobile phone was with one Yovan Kumar who works as junior grade employee at the Jalalabad civil hospital.

The phone was handed over to Mehmani on June 21 through the court process.

Mehami said before all this happened, he met Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora who assured action.

An internal probe to ascertain the lapses in the entire episode was conducted by assistant inspector general (crime) Bathinda, which indicted two policemen.

Mehami, says he now intends to file a petition to seek compensation.
