Two men allegedly molested a 24-year-old student at Delhi University. The girl from Manipur was out with younger cousin. The incident took place on Friday night near Double Storey Vijay Nagar in North Delhi.

A man who was urinating on the road deliberately exposed himself to the cousins, who were walking by. “When the victim's cousin objected, he started swearing,” said Thothuingam Shinglai, a student activist who helped the victim lodge an FIR with the Model Town police station.

Shinglai said the accused allegedly used racist slurs and attacked the cousin. “They kicked and punched and brought him down. One of them was wearing a turban. The other was without it,” he added.

Then, when the girl tried to intervene, they allegedly slapped, groped and molested her. “They even tried to remove her clothes. She continued screaming,” said Shinglai.

The complaint was filed in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Police have apprehended the two accused.

One of the two detainees, named Neel Kamal, has a history of assault on people from the North-east. The accused have been booked for molestation and voluntarily causing harm.

They have also been charged with Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, said Shinglai.

The victim and her cousin hail from Manipur's Ukhrul district. The girl is a BEd student and has been living in the locality for more than three years.
